about

SCHMID's HUHN "one of the most interesting bands of the jazz metropolis Cologne" (Jazzpodium) has cultivated its very own band sound in the past years, which deals with the connection of free improvisation and composition in a multi-layered way. After their debut LP in 2014 and "Golden Spheres" (2018), the first live album follows in 2022 - "Layers (live)".
On five consecutive evenings, the band around the two saxophonists Stefan Karl Schmid and Leonhard Huhn performed with- in the "SJO\CGN Small Series" at Cologne's famous Club Subway. The musical isolation that had been committed in the preceding months gave way here in an impressive manner and seemed like a liberating blow as an entry into a new creative period.
Stylistically eclectic but sonically coherent and with a wide range of timbres, the band produces music of highly intuitive interplay and virtuosic individuality. Schmid's Huhn draws on the diverse backgrounds and influences of the band's bustling members, combining post-bop, cool jazz, 20th century chromaticism, avant-garde jazz, post-punk and, for the first time, electronic sounds into a kind of crazy, acoustic brew. The compositions are thoughtful, at once gritty and full of energy.
With Layers (live), Schmid's Huhn creates a headstrong, multi-layered jazz that looks back respectfully while reaching for the future with great determination.
