Following a three-year break of not releasing any new material, "Bridge Ices Before Road" kicks off a new period for Ronny Graupes Spoom.
On the new album, the group is covering new ground both compositionally and in terms of personnel: After 15 years of playing in a trio format, Ronny decided to extend the band to a quartet.
The new compositions present less through-composed parts, and thus imply more open space for individual improvisation of the interpreting players.
These seven new songs are vessels to arrive at free, yet clearly organized destinations from where the improvisations can start off in any direction.
This recording documents the beginning of an ongoing work of exploring the inside of this newly expanded group, and also marks the return of Ronny Graupes Spoom to shoebill music, where their debut album “as they are” was released in 2013.

Ronny Graupe's Spoom

Ronny Graupe has been active playing and recording regularly since the year 2000.
His trio Ronny Graupes SPOOM exists since 2005,
with the internationally acclaimed musicians Christian Lillinger on drums and Jonas Westergaard on double bass.

Initially, the trio worked on the interpretation of jazz standards from the Great American Songbook, but after several years exploring this music they turned to focus exclusively on the original compositions by the bandleader.

Spooms sound is defined by the dense compositional structure of Graupes music and the interpretation of the intricate written material. At the same time the forms that emerge from the pieces are used for extensive improvisation, which also frequently lead the musicians to a terrain outside of the form as well - exploring various improvisational games, inspired by music of all kinds of genres.

Since August 2018, the group has been has been expanded into quartet by adding the renowned and unique improviser Christian Weidner on alto saxophone.
